What's going on BAye Hive Tribe?!
Today's post will be short and sweet.
It's Veteran's Day. Today is a day that I hold near and dear to my heart. Joining the U.S. Air Force was one of the best decisions that I've ever made for my life. It completely changed my trajectory.
I know it sounds cliché, but I wouldn't be who I am today without that experience. The people that you meet while you serve and because you served are some of the best friends in my life.
My Military Story:
I joined the military a little late. I was 22 years old. I had a 4 year old son. I was working two jobs, as well as, going to university. Joining the military was something that I always wanted to do but becoming a teen mom changed my path. I thought becoming a young mother had thwarted my aspiration to serve. I was wrong.
I served in the U.S. Air Force for 5 years, 1 month and 19 days. I became sick while on duty and became unfit to serve. I was medically discharged in June 2006. I was devastated. From that time on, I would not identify as a veteran unless it was absolutely necessary. I felt like a failure. I felt like my service did not matter.
I went on that way for years, until March 2015 when I joined Alpha Gamma Xi Sorority, Inc. Joining AGXi made me proud to have served, regardless of how it ended. I served honorably and I made a difference. It took being around other strong women service members for me to acknowledge, recognize and be proud.
So that's part of my military story. It goes way deeper but I won't bore you guys with those details for now. To all the service members out there, thank you for your sacrifice.
So what do you guys think? Drop your questions and/or comments below!
